Natural selection

Charles Darwin, a British naturalist, proposed the idea of natural selection. It is about evolution which states that over time we will have new species that are produced while other species can go extinct. This is due to the conditions in which these species are found where some resources that are limited will favor the survival of the ones that are the fittest. These species will be able to reproduce more efficiently then the ones less fit and will therefore leave more offspring which will lead to an increase in the frequency of the traits that are best for survival. over time species will  become adapted to their environments due to natural selection.

QUESTIONS:

1) How much time does it take for a certain species to adapt?

2) Why do certain species adapt to the environment while others cannot?

3) Can pollution have an effect on Natural Selection?

  1. Question 3:
    Yes it can.
For example because of pollution, light colored moths were no longer well camouflaged on the darkened tree trunks and therefore were more likely to be spotted by predators. This gave the dark colored moths an advantage

  2. Interesting post about natural selection, but what do you think of overproduction, which is a main factor that affects natural selection? How can the world, with the limited resources, nowadays, adapt to this?

  3. Very interesting article but it lacks evident proof for the reason to believe that evolution is true. Keep up the good work Dr. Hatoum :)

  4. Answer to question 1: It takes a lot of time for a certain species to adapt.
Answer to question 2: Certain species adapt to the environment while others cannot because of certain mutations that confer them a special advantage.
Answer to question 3: Pollution can have an effect on natural selection like the example of the peppered moths (Biston betullaria).
